Was 1979 that good? These two tracks mention it so it must have been pretty banging. I can just imagine my parents being in their early 20’s and wearing cool disco clothes…

Bustin’ out

One of the records I probably play the most when I’m at home is the “Mutant Disco” compilation from Ze Records. It’s seriously banging, and how could you ever get tired of Kid Creole and the Coconuts, French Boys or Cristina?

I had randomly bought it whilst on a weekend in Florence in 2006 for just 5 euros (also bagged the Mutant Disco ‘Garage Sale’ at the same time) and fuck, it was probably the best value for money ever.
Working for Ze would have been the dream job wouldn’t it? This is a tribute:

Lio – Sage Comme une Image

James Chance and The Contortions – Design to Kill

Don Armando – Deputy of Love

Cristina – La Poupée Qui Fait Non

Garçons – French Boys

A true story

vespa-piaggio-couple-romance

I have a friend, let’s call her A, she’s going out with this boy called B, but she told me that when she was still single, there was a guy called C that she liked, and she thought he liked her too.

Despite the obvious attraction, nothing ever happened, so she got together with B, kind of forgot about the other dude, and C even got himself a girlfriend.

But every now and then C pops back into her life and she feels like a little girl when she seems him, she tries very hard to act casual, keeps touching her hair and she probably even blushes when he leans over to speak to her.

But anyway, she asked me what should she do, leave B that she’s perfectly happy with and maybe pursue something that will never happen? Or forget about C forever and wonder every day what it could have been like?

Mate, I’m no agony aunt, so I told her something cheesy like ‘follow your instinct’, and then it reminded me of The Flirts for some reason.

Le futur

P1040658

Right now as I am spending a couple of weeks in the Caribbean I guess all I should be thinking of is the beach, eating fresh coconut on the beach, reading on the beach and all these kind of activities that you can do on a holiday.

Maybe soon I will quiz my 20 year-old cousin who lives here about what kind of music is hip and what they listen to at parties. I’ve heard someone mention ‘zouk-metal’ and also nights full of ‘retro zouk’ where you dance like it was 1978. Sounds promising.

But the topic of the day is miles away from all this and concerns the recent re-issue of Transvolta’s “Disco Computer”. It is perfect spacey sound with a robot voice ordering you to ‘dance all night’. Don’t you just love it when robots tell you what to do?

And the sound went

P1040621

Oh my, how I loved Barcelona this time round. I had already visited the city once before in 2005 but I guess with all the touristy stuff out of the way I felt more relaxed and simply ‘lived’ Barcelona.

A few friends and I decided we would hit the Sonar Festival this year (at first we were gonna go to Nuits Sonores in Lyon, but the Sonar line-up seemed almost too good to be true) so we rented an apartment and let the fun began.

Sonar by day was a cool place to hang out, with daytime dancefloor and cold beer at all times. . . In between sets I went to browse at the nearby record shops and found some cheap gems!

Nothing had really prepared us to how big the night-time Sonar was going to be though: ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE. I’m not sure how many airplanes you could fit in that hall but it was humongous.

The night verged on the perfect, I loved that there was a good disco vibe with James Murphy and Pat Mahoney going back to back, and then Erol Alkan who played so many disco bangers. We watched Richie Hawtin for a while, and Buraka Som Sistema which remains one of my personal favourites of the night.

Sebastian and Agoria finished us off. It was 6. 30 am when we left, it was raining and we had to fight to get on the bus. Hello again reality.

The tracks below just remind me of the whole festival…although Erol did actually play the Slick track if I remember correctly.

Spoonich – Laserdance

Slick – Space Bass

Bottin – Roger Bacon
